  3. 1 Samuel 16:14 informs us that "the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him."  To soothe Saul when he was tormented, David would play his harp for him.  He played so well that relief would come to Saul and the evil spirit would leave him (v. 23).
